If you’ve ever used Siri or Alexa, you’ve had a glimpse of what ChatGPT can do. However, ChatGPT goes a step further, allowing you to have real-time conversations as if you’re chatting with a friend.

Let me get you across this new phenomenon that’s expanding what AI software can do.

In this blog, I’ll start by explaining some basic concepts about AI and its practical uses, and I’ll show how ChatGPT fits into this picture.

What’s Behind Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is when machines can perform tasks that typically require human abilities like reasoning, planning, learning, and creativity.

I believe that AI allows technical systems to understand their environment, process what they observe, solve problems, and take action to achieve specific goals. A computer acquires data, either collected or pre-prepared via its sensors, processes this data, and then responds accordingly.

Often, AI systems can adjust their behavior by analyzing the results of previous actions, enabling them to work independently.

While some AI technologies have existed for years, recent advances in computing power, the availability of massive amounts of data, and new algorithms have driven significant breakthroughs in AI.

ChatGPT, The AI Dog Star

ChatGPT has been a sensation since its launch in late November 2022. Within a week, the platform had over a million sign-ups, and countless screenshots of conversations went viral on Twitter. Users enjoyed testing the tool, exploring its limits, often showcasing their creativity, and being amazed by its impressive capabilities.

ChatGPT, short for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, is a natural language processing (NLP) technology that allows machines to understand and respond to human language. Developed by OpenAI, it uses deep learning algorithms to generate human-like conversations in natural language. Essentially, it enables text-based interactions between machines and humans.

ChatGPT is based on the Transformer model and utilizes vast amounts of data to create a deep-learning model capable of understanding and responding in natural language.

The model was trained on large text databases from the internet, including a massive 570GB of data from books, web texts, articles, and more. In total, the system processed 300 billion words.

ChatGPT apps are designed specifically to understand and generate natural language, setting them apart from numerous other chatbots that deliver pre-determined retorts to precise tasks or inputs. Its ability to remember previous questions and respond accordingly makes it unique among chatbots, offering more dynamic and conversational interactions.

Even though the web interface is in English, ChatGPT can understand and respond in several languages, including French, Russian, German, and Japanese.

The Demise of the Classical Search Engines?

I find that ChatGPT’s ability to answer questions, paraphrase, and explain concepts simply has led some to believe it might challenge Google’s top spot. Experts suggest that AI text generators could surpass Google’s search engine because they interpret and respond to natural language queries more effectively.

This can lead to more accurate and relevant results compared to Google’s keyword-based searches. As these tools process more data, they are likely to become even better at understanding user needs and context.

While it’s uncertain if AI text generators will completely replace search engines, they are already changing how we find and interact with information online.

The Ongoing Rise of Chat GPT and AI

It’s hard to predict precisely what the future holds for ChatGPT, as it depends on various factors like technological advancements and the goals of the OpenAI development team. However, it’s possible that ChatGPT will persist in improving through ongoing learning and the integration of new features.

In the future, it could be used more widely to support organizations in responding to customer queries online or offering remote assistance in everyday life. It might also be incorporated into new platforms or programs, making it even more user-friendly.

ChatGPT will likely enhance its ability to understand human language and provide more logical and relevant responses. By using advanced machine learning techniques and training on new data sets, it could become even “smarter” and more adept at handling a broader range of questions and requests. There are many exciting possibilities for ChatGPT’s development.

The progress seen with these technologies suggests that AI will become even more “intelligent” in the future. For instance, instead of searching for a specific video on YouTube like “how to hit a football properly,” you could simply state your goal, “I want to improve my football kick,” and the system would provide a customized course.

This shift from content-based to goal-based queries can be summed up as the “3 P’s” model: Predictability, Personalization, and Proactivity. An improved version of ChatGPT or similar technology will be tailored to:

  • Individual needs
  • Sharing knowledge
  • Taking action with the user’s permission without needing an expressive query.

It’s also important to assess ChatGPT’s limitations and potential for misuse. This is likely one reason why OpenAI is currently offering it for free.

The Limitations of the Tool

The main concern about ChatGPT is the quality of the content it generates. Sam Altman, Co-Founder & CEO of OpenAI, warned users on Twitter about the accuracy of the tool’s data. The OpenAI homepage also notes that the chatbot can produce incorrect information, dangerous instructions, or biased content.

ChatGPT generates responses based on text that likely resembles a human answer. However, it sometimes doesn’t have the answer to a question and will create a response based on its training data. For simple questions with plenty of data, the answers are usually correct. For more complex questions, it might fill in gaps by making up information.

Another issue is copyright. The system draws on real texts to generate content. This makes it hard to verify the original sources and properly credit the authors.

ChatGPT also avoids taking sides on sensitive topics. It has safeguards to prevent responses related to racism, politics, or offensive subjects, providing neutral summaries instead.

Some analysts doubt the depth of ChatGPT’s learning capabilities. They argue that the tool doesn’t improve itself autonomously. Instead, its improvements come from human feedback indicating when its answers are wrong or convincing. Critics suggest that OpenAI may be leveraging user interactions to gather free learning data that would otherwise cost millions.

I recommend using AI apps as a source of creative inspiration. It can generate ideas and serve as a starting point for human work. AI can assist in daily life, but it cannot replace the unique value that humans bring.

Final Thoughts

We’ve entered a new era where we can now have conversations with artificial intelligence while we bring our own diverse and lived experiences to the table. For now, AIs are tools that can boost our productivity, but they can’t replace the unique sensitivity of humans.

With the rise of generative AI, critical thinking is more important than ever. My best advice is to explore and experiment with these technologies while staying aware of their limitations.
